Star Wars 7 Deleted Scene: Unkar Plutt Upsets Chewie

Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens is nearly a year old, Lucasfilm still isn’t done milking their monumental blockbuster for all it’s worth. The film will receive a special 3D Blu-ray release in November, and as a selling point, it will include numerous bonus features that were not available on the initial home media release this spring. No doubt, that move upset many fans who purchased a copy back in April, but it’s a shrewd (yet sneaky) business decision on the part of the studio. As people gear up for holiday shopping, a new Star Wars 7 Blu-ray could be a hot item.

Promotion is underway for the 3D Force Awakens Blu-ray, which covers the new supplemental materials that will be on the disc. Recently a portion of J.J. Abrams’ director commentary was posted online (detailing Kylo Ren’s mindset when he killed Han Solo), and now a deleted scene taken from the heroes’ visit to Maz Kanata’s castle has been shared. You can watch it above, courtesy of EW.

The sequence picks up shortly after Finn makes his decision to flee from the fight against the First Order. As Rey makes her way through the crowd, she unfortunately runs into Unkar Plutt, the Jakku junk dealer Rey and Finn stole the Millennium Falcon from during the movie’s first act. In their encounter, Plutt is obviously angry and threatens Rey. The scavenger pulls a blaster on her former employer, but she’s quickly disarmed. Chewbacca comes to the aid of his new friend, but Plutt is not intimidated by the Wookiee. In fact, he continuously pokes at Chewie’s wound and says he’s “half a Wookiee.”

Star Wars 7 Deleted Scene: Unkar Plutt Upsets Chewie

While the clip fades out before the scene’s resolution, several fans are already aware what happens next. Per the official Force Awakens novelization, Chewie rips Unkar Plutt’s arms out of their sockets, a humorous callback to Han Solo’s warning to C-3PO in A New Hope. There’s no denying that would have been a comedic moment to watch, but it’s easy to see why J.J. Abrams made the decision to leave this on the cutting room floor. It doesn’t add much to the story and would have raised some questions (like how Plutt tracked the Falcon to Takodana). Additionally, it would have happened right before Rey’s Force vision, and the juxtaposition of a shock value laugh next to a more dramatic beat could have been jarring.

Some deleted scenes – including ones from The Force Awakens – arguably would have improved their movies, but this showdown between Chewie and Unkar Plutt doesn’t fit the bill. Still, it’s nice to see that the footage wasn’t completely lost and can now be enjoyed from the comfort of living rooms. It’s unlikely Plutt will factor into the sequel trilogy in any way again, so this ultimately amounts to closure on his chapter in the Star Wars legacy. Things didn’t go the way he planned, but for viewers, it proved to be amusing.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now available on digital and Blu-ray. The 3D Blu-ray will hit stores November 15, 2016.
